Emersyn's Birth Story

Today Mama M. is hosting a Blog Hop for birth stories. Emersyn's birth story was so perfect, I thought it would be fun to re-read and then re-post!

From the beginning....

On Wednesday, 8/27, I was scheduled to be induced at noon. I had chosen an induction for mainly elective reasons but also because I had the gestational diabetes and was on insulin, which made me a candidate for having a bigger baby. However, at my 36 week ultrasound, the baby was perfectly average so my dr. was skeptical about me truly needing an induction but said if my cervix was favorable, I could do it. At my dr. appt. at 38 weeks, I was dilated to 3 so my dr. agreed to induce me the following week.

On Wednesday, I woke up and it was so surreal. I took my last shower pregnant, knowing that the next time I took a shower, my belly would be empty of a baby and I would be able to hold her in my arms. It was too surreal. My mom and I had manicures and pedicures scheduled for 9am. It was a nice time to get pampered, for sure. I had been told to call St.Vincent's just to make sure that they were running on schedule. Well, when I called at 11am, they were running late and asked if I could come in at 1 instead. This worked out for me because I hadn't eaten lunch yet. We went to Applebees and had a nice leisurely lunch, then headed to the hospital.
Upon checking in, I was led to my labor and delivery room. I got undressed and they wanted me to put on a hospital gown. I put it on but it was super uncomfortable and I felt really exposed in it. I had brought a tank top/nightshirt thingy that I preferred to wear and they said that was fine, just to know that it was going to get blood on it and might get stained. That was fine with me. I got situated in the bed in my own clothes, which was nice, and the nurse basically interviewed me and asked me a billion questions. Gradually, I got hooked up to the monitors, got my IV put in, which hurt really really bad by the way, and that whole process took almost two hours. It was about 3:45 before I got started on the pitocin. The pitocin was definitely no fun, it it everything they say it is, makes the contractions come harder and faster but I was fine, my mom, brother and husband were doing a good job at keeping me distracted and entertained. Having them there was such a blessing because I felt surrounded by people that loved me and it was great. The hardest part was getting comfortable on the bed and dealing with the constant desire to go to the bathroom. Everytime I had to go to the bathroom, I had to get unhooked from the monitors and get out of bed, take my IV over to the bathroom, and then go potty, which usually was like three drops. Every pregnant/formerly pregnant person knows what I am talking about. :) That was no fun. I tried to change positions to get more comfortable. I tried sitting on the birth ball but it was too low to the ground. I sat in a rocking glider thingy and that was a little more comfortable. I don't know if I was having "back labor" per say, but I was definitely feeling the contractions in my back. The contractions were not what I expected, they felt like the braxton hicks contractions that I had been having, only a little more crampy.
My dr. started her shift at 6pm and she came and checked me. I was 3 1/2 cm dilated but 90% effaced which was progress. She said that she was going to wait a bit to break my water and she advised me to get my epidural before she broke it because once the water was broken, things were going to get more painful. I wanted to hold out as long as I could but she said that I was doing really well and there was no point in delaying the epidural, it would have no effect on the baby and I may as well get comfortable.

At about 8pm, I got my epidural, which I have to say was the scariest part of the whole birthing process for me. At this point, Brett's parents had gotten here and so the room was pretty full. For the epidural, they cleared out the entire room except for Brett. They lifted the bed really high and had me sit on the edge of the bed with me hugging a pillow and my feet resting on Brett's knees. They did the numbing shot, which felt like a bee sting, just a sharp pain and then some burning. I felt the big needle go in, but I didn't know that is what it was, it hurt pretty bad and I cried a little bit. The whole thing was scary because of the risks associated with the epidural but about 10 minutes later, it was done and I didn't even know that she had already done the big needle, so that was a relief. They had me lay back down and I slowly started to feel my feet get tingly like they were falling asleep. They let the meds work for awhile and then through some testing (using alcohol wipes so I could measure how cold they were on my lower body versus upper body), they realized that the epidural hadn't taken as much on the right side. They propped me up on the left side to see if the meds would kind of drip their way to the right side and said to give it 15 minutes or so. If that didn't work, they were going to have to do the epidural ALL OVER. This was not what I wanted to hear!!! I stayed propped up for the 15 minutes and it didn't seem to be working. The nurse went to tell the anesthist (have no idea how to spell that) and she said it would be about another 30 minutes before she could get back to me. Well, 30 minutes later, the propping had worked and I was pretty equally numb on both sides, praise the Lord! At that point I was a happy girl, I was still having steady contractions and could see and feel my belly getting tighter with each contraction but my back pain had stopped and the contractions were a breeze. The dr. came back at about 9ish, maybe a little later and broke my water. That was an interesting sensation, just tons of warm liquid coming out. Then the nurse put in a catheter which honestly was a relief, now I didn't have to get up to go to the bathroom all the time or feel the sensation of having to go potty all the time!!

It was really special having my brother there. He is a pretty entertaining person and this was a tremendous bonding experience for us. I had joked around about him filming the birth and he has been horrified at the thought. However, when I was in labor, he was growing more intrigued and there was a great spot in the delivery room where he could stand and not actually see anything "inappropriate" :) , but still film the birth. He agreed and I was SO happy about that. He had filmed a lot of the labor and is working on a movie for us which is really really fun.
At about 10, Brett went out to get my family and Brett's family so they could come back in the room. We hung out until about midnight, when my dr. came back in to check me. I had only dilated to a 4 and was a little disappointed. The dr. said that I was probably not going to have this baby before morning so we may as well try to get some sleep. Brett layed down on the couch thingy, my mom and brother were on their laptops and Brett's family were napping out in the waiting room on couches. Brett totally passed out for a good hour I would say, maybe more. He was even snoring, it was too funny. At about 1:30 he woke up and him and my brother went to go get coffee from the cafeteria. Meanwhile, at about 12:30 I had started feeling tremendous pressure down low, I guess in my pelvic bone. I was not expecting that, I thought the epidural would kind of take care of all that pain. I asked the nurse and she said that the baby's head was making it's way through my pelvic bone. It was really painful and uncomfortable. Right when Brett left to get coffee, the nurse had went to look for my dr. because the pressure was becoming more frequent and consistent. The nurse came back and said that my dr. was in surgery but that she could actually check me. I was dilated to a 9+ and 10% effaced. The time was getting closer!!! Brett came back from getting coffee and was told to drink up because it wouldn't be long before I started pushing. They said that I should wait about an hour to start pushing because I should let my uterus do the hard work at this point and get the baby down as far as possible before I start having to do the hard work. At about 2:45 my nurse said it was time to start pushing and we asked my in-laws to wait outside. They brought in a mirror so that I could see what was happening. My mom and Brett were on either side of me, holding my legs and cheering me on as I pushed. It was an interesting sensation, the pushing, because my lower half was somewhat numb, so I had to make sure that I was actually pushing her out, not just having this tremendous pressure in my face. The hospital bed had these two bars on either side, and they said for me to grab them and act like I was rowing and use them to help me push. I had thought I would be more upright during the pushing but the labor nurse said that it wasn't the optimal position for me so I was more laying down, not entirely flat but more flat then I thought. It was great though, honestly, it was a fairly easy experience. The pushing wasn't a breeze but it was really rewarding being able to see what was happening in the mirror and see the progress that each push making. As her little head peeked out, we could definitely see hair which was exciting!!!! I never dreamed we would have a baby with hair, for some reasy I just imagined her coming out pretty fair skinned and blonde, mostly a baldy. :) With each push, my family got more and more involved. Pretty soon, everyone in the room was counting down with the nurse to push and at some points when the nurse was getting ready for the dr. to come in, Brett would even just do the countdown. I liked that I felt like I was in charge of the pushing too. I got to say when they started as I felt the contractions start and we did three sets of 10. I got to the point where we were starting to see her head that I got excited for the next contraction to start and even a little impatient!! Finally, my dr. came in and at that point I couldn't see much because she was kind of in the way of the mirror. I was okay with that though because I was starting to get worried about the logistics of the baby actually coming out. I mean, I could see the physics of the area and wasn't sure how it was all going to fit. The dr. used a warm compress on me to help me stretch and with each push was massaging the area to make the skin more loose. As her head got closer to coming out, the delivery nurse pushed the call button and said "stand by for delivery", which brought a couple more nurses into the room to get ready for the baby. I did a really long and strong push and her little head came out and everyone said, "keep pushing" and that was pretty painful, in the video I am like, "OW OW OW OW", and then the nurse laid my bed down a little flatter and out came my baby girl and her EXTREME cone head!!!!! Emersyn was born at 3:45am, about one hour after I started pushing which isn't much time at all for a first time Mom. They put her on my chest and cleaned her off and it was such a surreal moment in my life. I cried like a baby and just loved her. She was so beautiful and the moment was more then I could ever describe. I did tear a little bit but it was no big deal. While the baby was on me, they massaged my stomach to get the placenta out. I felt it come out which was strange but not painful. Then the dr. stitched me up, I have no idea how many, it was almost like they didn't want to let me know, kind of an out of sight, out of mind thing but I was fine with that. I tore a little on the top and bottom but it has been no big deal. I am a little sore still but it isn't a big deal. The tearing was a big fear of mine but turned out to be no big deal.

The baby's color wasn't great so she only got an 8 for her apgar. She wasn't warming up very well so they gave her a warm bath and then wrapped her up and stuck her on the warmer. She nursed within the first hour and she latched on right away, it was great. She was very alert and sweet, hard to believe that she was just inside of me hours earlier.

I have to say that giving birth was the most tiring thing I have ever done. About 30 minutes after she was born, I could hardly keep my eyes open, seriously. In fact, when they wheeled me to my recovery room, I couldn't even hold the baby because I was afraid of dropping her from falling asleep. Once in the recovery room, the baby was asleep so we took a nap, only to be woken up by dr.'s like an hour later. We asked them to come back, we were SO tired and the baby was asleep and we really needed to get some sleep.

Overall, I think I had the BEST possible birth experience that I could think of. I honestly could not imagine a better experience. I feel so blessed and know that God was watching over me and my baby during this whole time.

Our day at the hospital went by really fast, we had some visitor's, not too many but enough to make the day go by fast. That night was really rough at the hospital, the baby wouldn't sleep much and seemed gassy and Brett was super uncomfortable in his bed and I was uncomfortable in mine and we couldn't wait to go home! We didn't get discharged until 2, which was a little irritating, I think our nurse forgot about us, but it was fine. We got her all ready to go in her darling go home outfit and put her in her car seat for the first time and headed home.

That was so fun to re-live....can't wait for the next time around! :)

Getting to Know You Sunday

I so should NOT be sitting at my computer right now blogging but alas I am. I SHOULD be working out but I can hear my daughter talking up in her crib, refusing to take a nap (just talking and playing, not crying or anything) so I am hoping that by the time I finish this, she will have fallen asleep.

A girl can dream, right? :) If she hasn't fallen asleep, I will proceed to work out anyways. NO excuses! :)

Okay, here are the "Getting to Know You" questions, courtesy of Keely at MannLand5!

1. Do you iron your sheets? Umm....do I iron anything??? The answer is NO! Although, I would like to surprise my husband once and iron all of his work shirts. Right now, he tosses them into the dryer for 10 minutes each morning and fluffs them. They are wrinkle free so this works well but a crisply ironed shirt is so sharp lookin'.

2. Your dream car is....? Hmm....I used to be into cars. Like I loved going to the Auto Show and drooling over the decked out SUV's. But then I realized that cars are depreciating assets. And they are SO expensive new. However, it is my DREAM car you are asking about. So now, I think my dream car is a brand new Toyota Sienna, fully loaded with leather and wood grain. Yup, you read that right! A minivan is my dream car! Someday when I am not hauling kids everywhere, I would love some sort of affordable convertible. I think going on a drive on a summer evening in a convertible sounds heavenly. :)

3. Do you have an innie or an outie belly button? Innie. So random.

4. What meal do you look forward to the most..breakfast, lunch, or dinner? I used to LOVE breakfast on my days off with Brett because we would often go out but now that we are eating healthier, I would say dinner.

5. Favorite mascara? Maybeline brand, comes in bright orange tube and you can get it at Coscto. Score.

6. What would you say your decorating style is..traditional, modern, eclectic, country, french country, shabby chic, etc..? Hmm....I would traditional. My home has a lot of rich browns, rust oranges, greens, etc.

7. Have you ever been skinny dipping? None of your beeswax.

8. I hate the smell of...? Cabbage, brussel sprouts cooking, dirty diapers in the trash, cat litter, the Yankee Candle store (it gives me a headache!!!!!!), stinky dog breath, and olives.

Emersyn is STILL awake. Grrrrr. Looks like naptime might not happen today. Wish me luck.

Off I go to Shred, day 24! :)

Sunday Scripture Memory

I have successfully memorized my first verse for the year...."Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you, He rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all who wait for Him! Isaiah 30:18" Typed from memory!

My next verse relates back to a post I did earlier this week.

Zephaniah 3:17- "The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing!"

This verse is so personal to me now as a mother. I could say these exact same things to my daughter. I could tell Emersyn that I will take great delight in her, quiet her sadness and tears with my love and rejoice over her with singing. How neat for the Lord to paint such a vivid picture of a loving parent for us to relate to as He longs to be our heavenly father.

In order for me to receive this love though, I need to be willing. If Emersyn refuses to sit in my lap, it is much harder for me to comfort her when she is troubled. I will still love her if she runs away from me but my heart will ache to know that if she would just trust me, I could make it better for her. I need to climb up into my Saviors lap more often and LET Him rejoice over me with singing, let Him delight in me and do more things worthy of His delight, and be quieted by His love. These are the thoughts I will ponder as I memorize this verse this week.

TGI Friday

I snagged this idea from Tea (who snagged it from someone else, can't remember who) and I think it is such a great way to go into your weekend! :)

Trusting-that God knows the desires of my heart and has placed those desires in my heart with the intent of fulfilling them someday!

Grateful- that a week of hard work paid off! I lost 4 lbs! :)

Inspired- to FINALLY get pictures up in our dining room. Just bought two pictures shelves/ledges and we have been collecting frames from Goodwill that we are going to spray paint and then fill with pics of our sweet little monkey.

Favorite- new place! THE PITA PIT!!!!!!! We went there for lunch today and I had a super filling and delicious pita that was a little over 400 calories. AMAZING.
(I totally want to convince Brett to take me there for dinner tonight, ha! I can't stop thinking about it!!! I know, I know....moderation is key!!)

Random- I refuse to eat at Taco Del Mar now. We went there about a year ago and immediately noticed that they don't use gloves when they handle the food. I watched the lady like a hawk and she went and rang someone up, handled money and then went and got out the tortilla to make my burrito. I nearly gagged. Brett asked if another lady could make the burrito which was a little awkward but still. Then the new lady that was making my burrito had to go in the back for something and came out of the backroom and went right to touching my food without watching her hands. How do I know that she didn't pick her nose or worse in the back room??? We walked out and took a business card. I immediately called the owner and told him that I felt that his employees should be wearing gloves. He said that they wash their hands. I said that I watched two women NOT wash their hands. He said he would send me a certificate for a free dinner. Never got it. Ugh. So last week I found a vegan jr. burrito online that is relatively low calorie so I thought that we would give it another try. We go into the restaurant. Still no gloves. Ick. I watch the lady handle money, then reach into the chips container to get someone chips using ONLY her hands, no scoop or anything. Then she came over to the line, turned on the water, put her hands in the water stream for about 5 seconds, wiped them on her apron and started making food. FAIL. No soap, no nothing. We walked out. I want to call the department of health. Isn't that sick?!?!?!? Ha ha, sorry for rambling, I am so glad to have had an outlet to get this frustration out.

Interested- in learning more and more healthy whole food based recipes!

Dreaming- of what this time next year is going to be life after a whole year of lifestyle changes ad getting healthier. It's exciting!

Admiring- my BFF for starting her new eating plan this week. You can do it friend!!!!!

Yay!- for the many blessings in my life, including a HEALTHY daughter finally!! I haven't wiped her nose once today. I think her cold/ear infection is finally going away!!!

Happy 17 Months Emersyn Grace!

Dear Emersyn,

It's been awhile since I wrote you a letter on my blog so I thought that in honor of your 17 month birthday, I would let you know what you are up to.

Sometimes these letters to you are so hard to write out because it is truly impossible to put into words how special you are and how much I love you. Time is going by so fast and I need to be better about documenting all your new talents and traits. This could be a long one. :)

*Words you say: "Ma" (Grandma/Grammy), "Pah/Bah" for (Grandpa), "Papaaa" (Papa), "Nuh" (Nana), up, ball, kee (monkey), keekee (kitty), stap (stop for when we are tickling you), DAH! (dad), mum, tucka tucka (not sure what this is yet), geh (again), hot (usually accompanied by trying to take off a jacket or sweatshirt!).

*You are obsessed with your baby Gloworm. You sleep with it, you play with it first thing when you wake up from your night or a nap, and before I get you out of the crib you have to go press the button again so that you can enjoy the music while I change you. :) It is really cute. You have had the Gloworm for awhile but just recently realized that you could make it make music.

*You love your new kitchen. Your favorite thing to do is not pretend that you are cooking, it is to open and shut all the doors, except for the oven which you still refuse to acknowledge. You figured out that there is a manual turn table in the microwave so you will stick something in there, usually something too big that barely fits, shut the microwave with such a force that it scares me sometimes, and then turn the wheel under the microwave until you think it is done. So cute. One of my favorite things to do is watch you play with your kitchen when you aren't looking at me. I love seeing your little mind process things and wonder what you are thinking.

*Whenever you find a cell phone, you put it up to your ear and yell "YEAH?". SO cute.

*You have decided that you do NOT like cheese. I wish you would have decided this BEFORE I bought the 6000 count string cheese pack at Costco. :) It's okay sweet girl, your daddy and I will eat it. But I wish you would eat it too, as string cheese used to be your favorite food!

*My favorite thing to do with you in the mornings is make you oatmeal, toss blueberries in it and then we go sit on the couch and watch Sesame Street while I feel you breakfast. I know it isn't good to eat in front of the TV so we don't do it every morning. But when we do, it is so fun.

*You love your babies. You like to take your baby dolls and go sit in your rocking chair and rock them and pat their backs. You also LOVE the baby doll "backpack" that our neighbors have. Might have to get you one of those soon.....you are so cute with a little baby on your back.

*You are obsessed with your cowboy boots. I think it's because they have a little heel on them so you think your sassy. Today we took you to Starbucks, your favorite place. We put you in the high chair and you ate your yogurt just fine but then you refused to eat your banana because you wanted what we had. After Daddy and I finished eating our breakfast, you wanted to get down and show off your boots, which totally did NOT match your outfit. You then decided you would eat your banana but only while walking around in your boots. After you finished your banana, you decided to roll your high chair clear across the room to the little cubby where it goes. You are so smart.

*You love knocking on doors, particularly bathroom doors when people are in them. :)

*You love the pink hippo/cow (we aren't sure what it is) that Uncle Brock got you for your birthday. You like to slide it around all over the downstairs and then climb up on it and bounce.

*We have started giving you time outs. Not too many yet though. Your frequent offenses are climbing onto furniture and then standing up and trying to stand on the dishwasher, both very unsafe things to do. Mommy and Daddy love you so much but you know better and you get a little gleam in your eye when you are so obviously testing us. For the record, you get ALL your stubborn-ness from your Daddy!! ;) But you do get some of your fiesty-ness from your Mama, that I will admit....

*You seemed to be amused by the fact that Mommy is working out these days. Today you sat in your pink chair in the living room and laughed at me while I was doing "high knees". I realize that it is probably pretty funny looking so I don't mind. You also laid down on the floor with me when I was doing my crunches and gave me kisses. You are such a sweet girl!

*You love baths! When I ask if you want a bath, you run to the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs and start shaking it aggressively in hopes of knocking it down so you can get upstairs to the bathtub!

*You have started to understand the concept of cleaning up. The other day you took all your play food out of the crate. I asked you to pick it all up and put it back and kind of didn't think you would but sure enough, I looked over a couple minutes later and all the food was picked up! Also, today we were on our way out the door to go to Starbucks and you saw a coaster lying on the floor in the living room. You ran over to it, picked it up, and then ran into the kitchen, opened the bottom drawer and put the coaster right back where it came from! (Where YOU got it out I might add, you love the bottom drawer that has my placemats and dishtowels and coasters. You also love taking out ALL of my tupperware and stashing it throughout the house!)

*Yesterday while Miss Roxanne and I were chatting, I looked over at you and you looked like you just wanted to be one of the girls, lounging back your chair with your feet up on your pink stool!! It was SO cute! I wish I got a picture but sure enough, you bolted before I could snap one.

*You get sooooo excited when Daddy gets home from work. About 30 minutes before he actually gets home you start walking over to the window by the side of the door and yelling, "DAH!". Usually when he gets home though, you run to me and get needy for mama. I love this. :)

*You love watching DVD's in the car. I try not to let you watch the DVD player all the time, but when you do watch it, you only watch something educational. Right now your favorite DVD is "Blues Clues ABC's". You laugh when all the kids laugh on the show and really get into it. When I tell you that we aren't going to watch a DVD in the car, you get frustrated but then we talk about all the trees that we see and the cars and you have a good time pointing to them all and start jabbering to me. You have so much personality.

*You love your Nana and Papa's dogs. You know each of them by name, Sadie and Gracie and give them lots of loves. You also love our kitty and have learned to pet her very gently.

*You like bling. When you see my watch or wedding ring, you try to pull them off. This is probably because Daddy lets you play with his wedding ring by giving it to you and then you put it on his finger and laugh hysterically.

*You love to dance. Whenever you hear a musical ringtone, whether it's mine or someone in public you start to move and groove.

*You weight 24.5 lbs as of last Friday, which puts you in the 47th percentile. You have such a petite little figure, I love putting you in leggings and dresses. You are such a beautiful child and I spend a lot of our time together just staring at you and thanking God for you.

This doesn't even begin to sum up of the amazing traits and abilities that you have sweet girl. I am so happy to be your mama.. I pray that God would keep you healthy and strong and grow you in the sweet little girl that He has called you to be with a little assistance from your Daddy and I.

With all my love,

Your Mama

Wordless Wednesday- One Year Ago Today

So not impressed with her first taste of rice cereal, LOL!
